Blot up as much of the red wine as possible from the carpet using a paper towel or rag. Do not rub it, blot it. Rubbing it will force it deeper into your carpet, ensuring that it becomes permanent.
Work from the outside in, preventing the stain from getting any larger than it already is.
If for some reason you have access to salt and no paper towels or cloth, pour salt over the stain to prevent it from setting. You can vacuum it up later. The stain will still be there, it'll just stay lifted
Make a cleaning solution. Mix 1 tablespoon (15 g) of dishwashing liquid, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar (15 g), and 2 cups (16 oz) of warm water in a bowl. Mix it well, combining the three ingredients together.
Blot the stain with the mixture using a clean rag. Follow with a dry rag, working as you go. Alternate between dabbing on the vinegar solution and drying it up.
Blot the area with cold water. Use a different, clean rag. You want to remove any residue from the previous mixture. Then, blot to dry.
